BULK DISCOUNTS at foot of page

These are direct drop in replacements for the common Alpha 9mm vertical trimmers and metal shafted potentiometers. They are also directly compatible with many other 9mm pot footprints from Bourns, Panasonic and others, see the datasheet for footprint details.

These pots are more ergonomic due to the longer shaft and they are easier to read than the competitive offerings due to the white marker line. These pots also have a 15,000 cycle lifespan compared to the Alpha 9mm pot 10,000 cycle lifespan.

You may recognise these pots from recent Intellijel and WMD Euro modules and the Bugbrand WorkshopCrusher.

This B50K Linear pot is suitable for the ‘Scale’ pot on the Turing Machine.

knurled_or_hex_or_washer

Thonkiconn (PJ301M-12) is a new vertical mount 3.5mm switching mono phone jack. It is supplied with a hex nut (knurled nuts will be available next year).

The mechanism is identical to the ‘Erthenvar’ jack type (PJ301BM), it’s primary purpose is as a direct replacement of the popular Kobiconn 3.5mm jack but with a 100% vertically integrated footprint, i.e. no perpendicular ground pin. This jack is used in the newer Make Noise modules (Maths 2 etc.)

A really great bonus of these parts is they fit neatly into breadboard/stripboard/veroboard.

All materials used are RoHS compliant.

You can purchase extra bags of nuts and washers here.

NOTE: Please refer to the notes about the PCB HOLE in the Thonkiconn Jack Datasheet.
It is advisable to drill a 3mm hole in the PCB directly under the jack barrel centre or avoid routing traces or ground plane in that area.

Mutable Instruments Eurorack Module Tester PCB/Chip and Enclosure

$

We are now offering a PCB/Panel set and Enclosure for this project. These items are all manufactured with the blessing and support of Mutable Instruments. For the PCBs we use same PCB manufacturer as Mutable Instruments, to the same specifications and finish.

  • Enclosure with Anodised Aluminium panel (with high quality Aluprint legend) with a smoked black lens over the display and black Acrylic sides and bottom. No fixings are included.
  • PCB with Ready Programmed Logic Chip

Full information on the this unit is here.

NOTE:  neither Thonk or Mutable Instruments provide formal build or part sourcing support for this project. This is NOT a beginners project. There is a thread on Muffwiggler for community support here, and on the Mutable Instruments community forum here.

Please read the important information below about the display lens and BOM considerations

ModuleTesterCasePanel ModuleTesterCase

BOM CONSIDERATIONS – IF YOU ALREADY HAVE A BUILT TESTER PCB AND ARE CONSIDERING BUYING THE ENCLOSURE THEN READ THIS SECTION CAREFULLY

DISPLAY LENS INFORMATION: If you have an existing tester build you will most likely need to
ModuleTester-DisplayOffsetremove
the display Lens in the Aluminium panel first.  In order to fit the display behind the lens you must use a display which does not protrude further than XX mm from the surface of the PCB, these are readily available on eBay. The display part number recommended in the official Mutable BOM will not fit behind the lens as you won’t have enough thread on the PJ301BM jacks, in this case you need to remove the lens before fitting your completed tester PCB into the case. We also recommend that you solder the PJ301BM minijacks LAST when using the lens. Solder everything other than the jacks, put the jacks into place but DO NOT SOLDER yet, attach the panel and fit the nuts to the jacks. Make sure the jacks are aligned and then solder. They will be lifting up from the surface of the PCB slightly but they do work.

ENCODER INFORMATION: The part specced in the official Mutable BOM has a shaft length that ModuleTester-Encoderextends 20 mm from the PCB surface, when using the Aluminium panel with the Lens the shaft extends 5mm from the panel, this is just about workable but Ideally an encoder which extends 25mm from the PCB surface would be better.

The example below is of the original Mutable enclosure with Acrylic front panel. We have maintained exactly the same design but added an Aluminium front panel.

ModuleTesterProductSeveral problems werefaced during the development of the Mutable Instruments Eurorack modules, the module tester solves these.

  • How to power and test a module during development? Bench-top power supplies are cumbersome (especially for projects requiring 3 supply rails) and standard test equipment is sometimes useless or frustrating for quantities like musical notes or V/Oct scales. On the other extreme of the scale, who would run the risk of putting a half-built prototype in a rack loaded with thousands of euros worth of modules?
  • What kind of setup to use for factory testing?
  • How to take a project away from the lab without carrying heaps of “dependencies”?

Vactrol – VTL5C3, C4

The key component of Buchla style Low Pass Gates and many other exotic Buchla/Serge derived designs.

The C3 is the ‘standard’ Vactrol to use in a Buchla LPG, the C4 is a really nice contrast with a longer tail and often more saturated sound due to the longer sustain.

Excelitas Vactrol analogue optoisolators have an LED as the input element and a photoconductive cell as the output element, the coupled pair acts as an electrically variable potentiometer. These are the parts previously known under the brand name VACTEC, as manufactured by Perkin Elmer.

These PT range knobs are made in the USA by Rogan, they are not official Mutable Instruments or Make Noise products, but are the same style from the same factory.

  • PT-1PS: small white pointer knob (all knobs on Branches, Shades, Shelves, Streams, etc)
  • PT-2S: medium black encoder knob, no pointer (medium, i.e. Braids encoder knob)
  • PT-2PS (D-shaft): medium white pointer knob (i.e. Braids knobs, Frames top row, etc)
  • PT-3PS: large white pointer knob (i.e. big knobs on Clouds, Elements, Tides, etc)

Refer to the Rogan data sheet Rogan to check dimensions and other information.

Please NOTE: You remove existing knobs from your modules at your own risk, don’t force them! Also please check what shaft types you need first BEFORE ordering. Module manufacturers do not always consistently use a certain shaft type, they may change between D or T18 for example.

Taking Knob DIY to the next level!

These are the same brass inserts with M3 setscrew that you find inside our high quality Davies 1900h clone knobs. They are designed for a 6.4mm pot shaft.

You can use these to make one-off or small runs of knobs out of any material you like. Wood, Sugru, 3D Printed… it’s up to you.

You could also just use them as small knobs if you like how they look. Note the screw does extend outside the body of the insert when fully tightened on a pot shaft.

New Black 1900h types

  • Black No Line – No white line on the top. Encoder style for ‘endless’ rotary pots on digital modules.
  • Black (T18) – For 18 teeth knurled shafts such as Doepfer, Elby etc. These are pure plastic, not brass inserted.
  • Black (D) – For Make Noise, Intellijel, 4ms and many more. These are pure plastic, not brass inserted. Double check your modules actual knob orientation details before purchasing.

The Black (D) part has been specially manufactured to fit correctly on new style Make Noise modules. The Rogan knobs on Make Noise modules have a round hole for around 7mm of the knob shaft before it turns to a D shaft. This means that other manufacturers D shaft 1900h clones will sit no closer than 7mm off the surface of a Make Noise panel. Note the pointer orientation on these means they are not suitable for all D-Shaft pots, see diagram below, the pointer is on the curved side of the D.

All PCB sets include the Micro SD Card slot component FREE

This is not a full kit, if you want a full kit go here.

Sd_card_slot

This is the only hard to find component required for Radio Music. Note you still need to purchase an MicroSD card! The very cheap $1 type cards are not worth the trouble they will cause you, we highly recommend SanDisk MicroSD cards. Easily available from any camera or computer stores, eBay or Amazon etc.

The options available for the partial kit are:

  • 4hp Eurorack Panel
  • Switch (7 different button colours)
  • Teensy 3.1 – Built by PJRC in the USA
  • 2 x Black Davies 1900h Clone Knobs
  • 2 x Alpha Vertical 50K Linear pots
  • 10 x Thonkiconn jacks (this is the smallest quantity I sell)

Full project details and documentation here – http://github.com/TomWhitwell/RadioMusic/

NOTE – you need to purchase a MicroSD card and a Micro-B USB Cable elsewhere to set up this module. The Micro-B cables are the smallest type shipped with Kindles and many Android phones. You also need a card reader to write files to the SD card, many laptops and desktops already have them built in now. – Read the setup and build documentation here.

These are the exact knobs used on recent Intellijel modules. (Shapeshifter, Metropolis, Atlantis, SpringRay etc.)

They are manufactured by Sifam (in the US distributed by Selco).

Both sizes of knobs are available in 6mm D-Shaft and 6mm T18 shaft types.

The Cap comes separate from the pot body so the orientation of the pointer to the D-shaft can be set at any angle (e.g. you can choose either zero degrees or 180 degrees, which are both typical). The body and cap colours are an identical match to Intellijel colours.

These knobs are not an Intellijel product and are not sourced via Intellijel.

Shaft Diameter – 6.35mm (0.25″)

Shaft Length – 15mm (0.59″)

These are the pots that are included with 95% of all Thonk produced kits and specced by many manufacturers. These pots work great with all the 6.35mm round shaft knobs we sell.

These pots are perfect for Music Thing Modular, Synthrotek, RYO, Manhattan Analog, Fonitronik, Frequency Central (FCUK) & HexInverter projects where 9mm pots are specced… but do double check as there are a few exceptions. They are not the first choice for panel-wiring… but we do have Pot Chicklets coming soon to redress that balance!

We love these pots, they feel smooth and precise and have got a strong following for a good reason. One thing that always annoyed us was that annoying little anti-rotation tag that you have to cut or break off, so unlike other distributors we got them manufactured without that tag. Also removing the nut and washer on each pot to build something like a 64 pot sequencer panel can get REALLY tedious, so again unlike other distributors we include the nut and washer bagged separately. It only save 20 seconds per pot maybe, but it adds up!
